Seismic analysis of retrofitted historical masonries using passive control systems

For the seismic protection of historical masonry structures the basic principles of reversibility and compatibility must be respected.Seismic risk mitigation using damper devices is based on their capability to dissipate seismic energy and complies with these basic rules. For the optimization of retrofitting measures and the minimization of interventions, analysis of the structure is necessary in order to evaluate its vulnerability levels, and the effectiveness of the proposed measures. In this paper an integrated methodology is presented for this purpose. The methodology involves the failure analysis of finite element models of historical masonry structures and the quantification of their vulnerability using fragility curves diagrams. The application of the methodology is made for two typical examples of Byzantine architecture structures.Their seismic response under a possible earthquake event is evaluated and retrofitting using dampers is investigated, when applicable.
