Processing of fiber optic dynamic strain records for structural monitoring

The recent development of dynamic long base fiber optic sensors has made possible to perform some interesting experiences in the field of structural monitoring. The first experience is related to the measurements performed on sample reinforced concrete beams subjected to known levels of damaging by cracking and corrosion. For the dynamic measurements,SOFO linear deformation sensors have been used. The second experience consists in the recording of dynamic measurements on a cable-stayed bridge in the Port of Venice. In this case, the measurements have been performed by means of the same SOFO linear deformation sensors permanently attached to the structure for long-term static structural monitoring. The paper addresses specific problems in the processing of the related signals and of the characteristics of the information that can be derived from the related strain time-histories in view of the condition assessment of structures.
