Trust-region Optimization Based Model Updating with Subset Selection and Damage Functions for SHM

Because a structure’s modal parameters(natural frequencies and mode shapes)are affected by structural damage, finite element based model updating techniques may be applied as one approach to locate and quantify structural damage. However, the dynamic behavior of a structure can only be observed in a narrow knowledge space, which usually causes non-uniqueness and ill-posedness in the damage detection problem. Thus, advanced optimization techniques are a necessary tool for solving such a complex inverse problem.Furthermore,a pre-selection process of most significant damage parameters is helpful to improve the efficiency of damage detection procedure.A new approach is proposed herein to accomplish this task.Starting with a simple 1-D beam model, this paper first demonstrates several essential concepts in model updating.Second,a parameter subset selection process is combined with the application of damage function.A more advanced example considering a 2-D model is considered.Trust-region based optimization method is adopted to solve the corresponding nonlinear minimization problem. The focus is to provide a clear understanding of the nature of model updating techniques application in structural health monitoring and meanwhile provide a robust solution to this challenging problem.
