Experience in introducing smart structures technology into civil engineering curriculum

This paper presents recent education development in the area of smart structures technology at Lehigh University with the goal of preparing the future engineers of the society for this cutting-edge technology,for which they may see broad application in their generation.In particular,a civil engineering course titled “Smart Structural Systems that was taught first time to undergraduate students is described.Two surveys of the students enrolled in the “Smart Structural Systems course were conducted.The survey data revealed the need for introducing smart structures technology to civil engineering curriculum,which is important to ensuring the continued development of innovative structural systems for the world’s future.A recent survey on smart structures technology development of students in US,China,Korea,and Japan is also described in this paper.
