Qinghai-Tibet Railway Subgrade Temperature Monitoring System Based on FBG Sensors

Qinghai-Tibet Railway is the longest and highest plateau railway in the world.A long-term monitoring system of the stability of the subgrade in the permafrost regions should be put forward immediately to prevent damage to the railway.A subgrade temperature monitoring system based on fiber Bragg grating(FBG)sensors is presented in this paper. The principle of the FBG sensors was introduced, and the feasibility of the FBG sensors in the permafrost area of Qinghai-Tibet plateau was analyzed.A FBG sensor network is set up which contains sensors, fiber optic cables, demodulators, control units, slave monitoring stations and a maser monitoring station.Fifteen FBG temperature sensors and thermal resistance temperature sensors were embedded into one subgrade monitoring hole to make a contrast experiment. The result of the experiment shows that the accuracy of the FBG temperature sensors is better than 0.1 centigrade,it also shows the stability and reliability of the FBG sensors in the harsh environment of Qinghai-Tibet plateau, which proves the feasibility of the application of FBG sensors as well as the monitoring system on the Qinghai-Tibet railway.
