Shear excitation in piezoelectric ultrasonic motors
A new actuator concept for piezoelectric ultrasonic motors(USM)using the d15 effect is considered.Whereas the piezoelectric d33 and d31 effects are normally used in commercial motors, there exist hardly any USM based on shear actuation.Prototypes existing in the literature are described briefly. This paper introduces a new concept for actuation using the d15 effect. It is described analytically by deriving and solving the equations of motion for a shear actuator with voltage excitation. An optimization is performed with respect to the dynamic piezoelectric coupling factor.Suitable superposition leads to ultrasonic traveling waves capable of driving a rotor.Feasibility of the concept is demonstrated by a first prototype motor.
