Vibration reduction of HDD disk-spindle system using piezoelectric shunt damping
This paper presents piezoelectric shunt damping to suppress vibration of a computer hard disk drive(HDD)disk-spindle system.A target vibration mode which significantly restricts recording density of the drive is determined by analyzing dynamic characteristics of the conventional drive using both modal test and finite element analysis. In order to effectively suppress unwanted vibration of the target mode,a piezoelectric bimorph is designed and integrated to the drive by considering mode shape of the target vibration mode.Subsequently,an electrical admittance of the bimorph is derived from the piezoelectric constitutive equation and stress-strain relationship.A sensitivity analysis method is then undertaken to determine optimal design parameters. After manufacturing the piezoelectric bimorph with optimally obtained design parameters, vibration control performances of the proposed shunt damping for the HDD disk-spindle system are empirically evaluated in frequency domain by changing impact and measuring points.
