Modal strain energy index for damage detection of a three-dimensional frame structure
Vibration-based structural heath monitoring are becoming an attracting and challenging area of intelligent infrastructures. And damage detection based on changes of modal information of pre-damaged and post-damaged structures is a promising global method. In this paper, modal strain energy method for detecting damages of a three-dimensional frame structure is investigated.Damage localization for diagonal braces, horizontal beams and vertical columns under different modes and different partial degree of freedoms(DoFs)is considered.A numerical model of a three-dimensional frame structure is developed by the finite element method.Several damage scenarios including single damage locations and double damage locations are simulated.Modal strain energy method is applied to detect the damage(s)for each damage case.Useful results are obtained for both single damage scenarios and double damage scenarios.
