Monitoring the Jacket Platform Structures in China Bohai Sea

Structural Health Monitoring(SHM)technology, which is synthesis of advanced sensor technology, data processing, damage diagnosis and condition assessment techniques,is emerging as a costeffective management for enhanced safety of critical structures.Because of the harsh ocean environments,SHM of offshore structures presents more challenges comparing with onshore structures. In this paper, the development of monitoring systems for offshore platform structures in China Bohai Sea since 1990’s are reviewed.Emphasis is placed on the newly developed SHM system with advanced sensors for CB32A,a jacket platform in China Bohai Bay.In this system Fiber Bragg Optic Sensors for strains,Polyvinylidene Fluoride (PVDF)sensors for cracks and fatigue life gauge for accumulative fatigue damage were adopted for monitoring structural local responses.A monitoring subsystem for environmental factors was installed to ascertain the inputs to the structure. The overview of the system, the design and implement of the system in ocean environment are presented.Assessment and processing of the monitored data are in initial stage, and preliminary results of data verification, structural parameters identification and safety evaluation using updated model with input from monitored data are presented. Finally, critical issues to advance the monitoring technology to become an acceptable and standard practice of offshore oil and gas industry are summarized.
