Quick earthquake damage detection method for bridge structures
When an extreme earthquake occurs,it is essential to detect the severe structural damage that affect the structural safety immediately.This paper proposes a method for quick earthquake damage detection/ evaluation of reinforced concrete bridge columns.An intelligent sensor unit is developed that captures changes in the natural period of a bridge column by FFT of response acceleration recorded on the top of the column during an earthquake,and estimates the maximum response ductility based on those changes.The efficiency and applicability of the proposed method was investigated through a series of shake table tests of reinforced concrete bridge column models.The maximum response ductility estimated by the method provides good agreement with the actual ductility.
