Issues in Kalman Filter-based Damage Evaluation without Excitation Information

A Kalman filter-based system identification procedure is proposed, denoted hereafter as GILSEKF-UI,to locate defect at the local element level using limited noise-contaminated response information measured at few dynamic degrees of freedom and without using any excitation information. To satisfy all the requirements of the method, the authors proposed a two-stage approach. In the first stage,a substructure is selected based on the available response information. It is then identified by another method proposed by the research team.In the second stage, the whole structure is identified.Issues related to the location, size, and the numbers of substructure, the minimum and types of response information required to identify large structural systems, and the location of the defect spot(s)with respect to the node point(s)where response information is measured, etc.are presented in this paper.
