Properties of Collagen and Chitosan Blend
Collagen and chitosan do not exist together as blends in nature,but the specific properties of each can be used to produce biocomposites with novel biocompatibility.In this study,collagen and chitosan was dissolved in acetic acid in a concentration of 1g/L(w/v),respectively.The mixtures of collagen and chitosan with the mass ratio of 1:1 were cast into blend films.Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy showed that collagen and chitosan are miscible at the molecular level.X-ray diffraction of collagen and chitosan blends indicate that the collagen helix structure is lost when combined with chitosan.We cultured MC3T3-E1 osteoblast on these films to estimate the biocompatibility and bioactivity.The blending of collagen with chitosan gives the possibility of producing new bespoke materials for potential biomedical applications.
