Polypropylene Composite Membranes for PEMFC
Composite membranes were formed by impregnating porous meltblown polypropylene (MBPP) film with sulfonated phenethyltrimethoxysilane (s-PETMS)/ Liquion(R)mixture;hot-pressing the impregnated membrane at 160℃ and gradual cooling to room temperature. These composite membranes were characterized for membrane structure and water distribution. The performance of the composite membrane was compared with the commercial membrane (Nafion(R)17) in terms of current density and water distribution in a Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC) at room temperature,60℃ and 80℃.The addition of s-PETMS in Liquion(R)MBPP composite (LPMc) showed an 80% increase in the ion exchange capacity. The percentage drop in maximum current density values with time was 10 to 12% of that for Nafion(R)117 membrane and 3 to 6% for the LPMc membranes.
