Effects of Surface Modification on the Structure of VGCF

Two-step surface modification for vapor grown carbon fiber (VGCF) has been performed with hydrogen peroxide and concentrated nitric acid.X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis indicates that, the graphite crystal structure of VGCF is hardly transformed after surface modification;Scanning electron microscope (SEM) observation shows that, there is no obvious difference of macroscopic morphology and structure of VGCF before and after modification;Transmission electron microscope (TEM) observation indicates that, the microscopic structure of VGCF is still intact and there is no obvious damage after surface modification;Atomic force microscope (AFM) analysis indicates that, there is little change of the microscopic surface roughness of VGCF after surface modification. That is,after two-step surface modification with hydrogen peroxide and concentrated nitric acid, there is no obvious change of the holistic structure of VGCF,except the slightly change of its microscopic surface roughness.
