Interfacial Bond Property of Vapor Grown Carbon Fibers Modified by Silane Coupling Agent

In order to improve the surface affinity of vapor grown carbon fibers (VGCF) with polymer matrix material,VGCF were surface-modified utilizing different concentrations of silane coupling agent for the sake of employing polar groups on their surfaces. The varieties on the surface morphology, grafted functional groups, the loading amount of coupling agent and crystal lattice of VGCF were observed and characterized by SEM,TEM,AFM,EDS,FTIR,TG and XRD,respectively.VGCF/PVC composites were prepared, using the pouring procedure under the normal pressure. The dispersion and the interface combination of VGCF in the VGCF/PVC composites were observed by means of SEM.The results showed that, siloxane oligomer was formed on the surface of VGCF after silane-coupling modification, and therefore enhanced the interfacial bond between VGCF and polymer matrix.
