FTIR Study and Statistical Analysis of the Hydrolytic/Thermal Degradation of Poly(ethylene terephthalate) Fibers

In this research work,FTIR study was used to investigate the hydrolytic/thermal degradation of PET chips and fibers.Degradation was monitored using the intensity of the ester and acid (C=O) bands. There were two different absorption bands for carbonyl C=O groups in the range of 1700-1750 cm-1,whereas the peak at 1700-1730 cm-1 correspond to acid carbonyl group and the peak at 1735-1750 cm-1 is related to initial ester ones. The acid/ester ratio of carbonyl group peak altitude represents an important factor for monitoring degradation of PET by FTIR spectrometry.Obtained results show that degradation is less pronounced FDY samples than that of chips and POY.The acid/ester ratio of the final hydrolyticly degraded FDY is about 3-fold higher than that of the virgin sample, while this ratio is about 10-fold for chips and about 50-fold for POY.Statistical analysis (F-test) was used to study the influence of the temperature and exposure time on the PET degradation. For FDY fibers, the temperature has a significant effect on the both carboxyl end group concentration and the molecular weight in the hydrolysis process for all of the exposure times was tested. This is reflected in the significant which is smaller than the significance level (p<0.05).Similar statistical analysis was carried out for chips and POY.
