Melt-spinning the Basalt Fiber by Dielectric Heating
Basalt fibers produced by melting natural basalt rocks are drawing a great attention of engineers due to the eco-friendly,high mechanical and heat resistant properties. In this study,an experimental melt spinning system was designed, adjustable easily to various manufacturing conditions. As the energy source for melting the quarried basalt rock microwave was used.In the heating zone a crucible was placed that has a spinning hole with various diameters. Results demonstrated that this experimental system allowed manufacturing basalt fibers with the diameter up to about 6 μm.The diameter of basalt fiber decreased nonlinearly,as take-up speed increased. The drawing distance hardly affected the diameter variation of basalt fiber.
