Assessments of Carotid Velocity Waveform in Sedentary and Regular Execise-trained Men
It is unknown that regular aerobic exercise is able to improve carotid blood flow velocity waveforms in either healthy young or healthy older individuals. We investigate the role of regular exercise on the age-associated alterations in blood velocity waveforms in common carotid artery (CCA) by using cross-sectional approach. We study 82 putatively healthy volunteers with age range of 21-76 years:50 subjects are sedentary and 32 subjects are regular exercise-trained.We assess the blood velocities at rest in peak systolic (S1),second systolic (S2),incisura between systole (I) and peak diastolic (D),and end-diastolic (d) in young and older subjects.Blood velocities in S1 and D are higher in exercise-trained The indices of 1-d/S1,S2/S1-1 and 1-D/I have marked higher values in exercise-trained adults. In conclusion, regular exercise training can improve age-associated deterioration in blood velocities and its indices. The adaptations of blood flow velocities to regular exercise were not different with aging. In the further investigations, the assessment of aerobic fitness and vascular aging has potential by using the criteria of peak systolic and peak diastolic, and its indices.
