Investigation of R290/R170 Substituting R22/R23 in Cascade Refrigeration Cycle

R22/R23 have been predominantly used in cascade refrigeration cycles.Even though the ozone depleting potential of R22 is not as high as CFCs, it still contains ozone depleting chlorine, and will be forbidden. Hydrocarbons, such as R170 (ethane) and R290 (propane) are the environmental benign alternative refrigerants.Thermodynamic analysis on the R290/R170 cascade system under the evaporating temperature from -80℃ to -60℃ and the condensing temperature from 30℃ to 40℃ are processed. System performances, such as the maximum COP(coefficient of performance),the cascade evaporating temperature, the mass flow ratio between high-temperature circuit and lowtemperature circuit and their variations are compared with that of the R22/R23 under the same conditions. Results show that the performances of the two cascade systems are approximately the same. So R290/R170 can be considered as a good substitute for R22/R23 in the cascade refrigeration cycle when the evaporating temperature is lower than -60℃.
