Development and Application of Low Frequency Pulse Tube Cryocoolers
This paper reviews the development and commercialization of low frequency pulse tube cryocoolers. Based on a concept of gas piston inside of the pulse tube, the configurations of phase shifter and methods of staging are discussed by comparison with traditional cryocoolers. Two unique features for the development and application of the pulse tube cryocoolers are discussed: DC circulation flow and extraction of intermediate cooling from the regenerator and pulse tube. Due to their extremely low vibrations, both single-stage and two-stage pulse tube cryocoolers have opened many application for cooling sensitive cryogenic devices. The 4K pulse tube cryocoolers make the design of many commercial superconducting magnet systems (MRIs, FTMS, NMR, etc.) with great success, and also provide efficient solutions for liquid helium usage.
