Cryogenics for Fusion
Fusion of hydrogen to produce energy is an advanced technology under study to meet the mankind raising need in energy and as a possible substitute to fossil fuels in the future. This alternative has been under investigation for a few decades, through significant experimental reactors like Tore Supra, DIII-D and JET. The construction of ITER will be the next major step toward fusion for energy. The tokamak reactors require extensive cryogenic systems with large capacity of helium refrigeration. Air Liquide has contributed to most of the fusion experiments by supplying advanced cryogenic units and services. In the present paper,an overview of the cryogenic systems installed at Tore Supra,JET,IPR and KSTAR are presented.
