Semi-retractable Current Leads for High-field Superconducting Magnets

A semi-retractable current lead for high-field superconducting magnets is described. The motive of this study is to develop a more user-friendly and efficient current lead for a 21T Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometer. The semi-retractable lead is composed of a normal metal element and a high temperature superconductor (HTS) element. An HTS element is partly immersed in liquid helium and the joint between the metal and HTS element is thermally anchored to the first-stage coldhead of a cryocooler. After magnet energization a metal element is disengaged from an HTS element without breaking vacuum to the insulation vacuum space. In the paper, the optimized dimensions of the lead are presented when carrying operational current with some margin. An intermediate block with lockable set point is designed, fabricated and tested in the insulating vacuum system. The effects of vacuum level and performance cycle on the electrical contact resistance in a lockable set are also investigated.
