Simulation Research on Vertical Emergency Evacuation in High-rise Buildings
The idea of using elevators to speed up emergency evacuation, not only for persons with mobility limitations but also for general occupants, has gained considerable attention in recent years. In this paper, an integrated simulation model of vertical evacuation in high-rise buildings, based on the calculation of walking speeds in stair and elevator traveling time, is developed to simulate the evacuation by stairs and elevators. The periodic scanning algorithm and the event scanning algorithm are used to execute the stair simulation and the elevator simulation, respectively. The total egress time by elevators and stairs with floors and the proportion of population per floor are calculated and compared to find the optimal situation of vertical evacuation. According to the results of simulation, appropriate use of elevators may remarkably decrease the total egress time. At last, some discussions and suggestions are presented, which may be helpful for the plan or strategy of evacuation from a high-rise building, facing the threats of fire, earthquake, explosion or terrorist attack.
