Genotypic difference and its correlation analysis in antioxidant activities of sweetpotatoes (Ipomoea batatas(L.)Lam.)with different flesh colors

Antioxidant activities (AE) of 12 sweetpotato genotypes with different flesh colors(white,yellow,orange and purple) were measured by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl(DPPH).The results showed antioxidant activity was highest (3.333) for Ayamurasaki(purple-fleshed) and lowest(0.029) for Lizixiang (white-fleshed).The AE values were poorly correlated with the Vitamin C contents in varieties(r=-0.162).However,it was significantly correlated with the contents of total anthocyanins,total phenolic,total carotene and total flavonoid in varieties (r=0.900,0.925,0.957,0.972,P<0.01,respectively).The total phenolic contents(4.59-64.84 mg gallic acid equivalent/g dw) were highly correlated with the AE.Therefore,the total phenolic content can serve as a useful indicator for the antioxidant activities of sweetpotato.
