Metabolic engineering of antioxidants in sweetpotato

Orange gene(IbOr) involved in carotenoid biosynthesis was isolated from the storage roots of yellow-fleshed sweetpotato(Ipomoea batatas L.cv.Sinwhangmi) and characterized. The deduced IbOr showed a 97% identity with a putative orange gene from morning glory(I.nil).The IbOr also shared greater than 70% homology with various plant orange genes and had a well-known feature of Cys-rich zinc finger domain specific to DnaJ-like molecular chaperones.IbOr was expressed predominantly in leaves and fibrous roots of sweetpotato. We investigated the expression patterns of genes related to carotenoid biosynthesis and IbOr gene in response to various hormone treatments. We also cloned IbMYB1 cDNA from purple-fleshed sweetpotato(cv.Sinjami),which is responsible for anthocyanin biosynthesis.
