Effects of potassium on potassium efficiency, yield and pigment contents of sweetpotato

The effects of Dotassium(K)nutrition on K efficiency, storage root yield and pigment contents of sweetpotato were studied.84 cultivars were screened to find out cultivars having high pigment contents as well as high K efficiency in terms of yield production under low K supply(35mg/kg soil).Genotypes Zhe 3481,Zhe 6025 and Zhe 7512 were selected for their high carotene content. The cultivar Zheda9201 was selected for high anthocyanin content. The selected genotypes were further tested at two K fertilizer levels i.e.Ko(0 kg/ha K2SO4)and K1(270kg/ha K2SO4).It was found that K application increased both the yield and pigment content of storage roots of sweetpotato.Furthermore,an investigation into the optimal K fertilization level in terms of yield and pigment content of genotypes Zheda 9201(purple flesh),Zhe3481(orange flesh)and Xushul8(white flesh;as control genotype)were tested at different K fertilizer application levels i.e.K0,K150,K300,K450,and K600(kg/ha).Of the tested doses of K,the application of K300 produced the highest yield(8.99 s/ha),RKER(70.61 g DW g K-1)and pigment of storage roots were 13.60 mg.100g-1 carotene and 12.45 mg/.100g anthocyanin respectively. In addition, deeper the color, the higher the pigment content of the storage roots of sweetpotatoes. The higher yield and concentration of pigments in sweetpotato can lead to a higher pigment accumulation or higher total pigment production those results to higher profits.
