Breeding of Quanshu No.9,a new sweetpotato variety with high starch content and high yield
In this paper,the breeding,selection and the main characteristics of Quanshu No9 were preliminarily presented in order to give some references for its applications to production and breeding.QuanshuNo9 is a new sweetpotato variety with high yield and high starch content developed from Quanzhou institute of Agricultural Science.This variety was selected from the female parent Quanshu 268 by openpollinating in 2003,seedling and line selections were practiced in 2004,preliminary and advanced yield trials were carried out from 2005 to 2006,The Fujian Province regional trials were conducted in 2007.The regional trials of Fujian Province,the Changjiang River Valley and south of China,and the regional production tests of Fujian Province,would be conducted in 2008 as a result of prominent Derformance in the regional trials of Fujian province in 2007.The trials in different years and multiple-spots showed that QuanshuNo9 had superior high and steady yield.The annual yields of fresh root ranged from 39.080 t/ha to 49.750t/ha,average was 42.646 t/ha,over Jinshang 57(CK)8.7％～27.5％(average 16.67％)；The annual yields of dry root were between 11.712～14.925 t/ha(average 12.976 t/ha),over the CK 26.53％～52.30％(average 37.18％)；The annual yields of starch were between 8.205～9.851 t/ha (average 8.754 t/ha),over the CK 33.65％～55.36％(average 43.77％).The dry matter content of fresh root was 30.05％,over the CK(Jinshang 57)4.6 percentage point(over 17.16％)；The starch content of fresh root was 20.6％,over the CK 3.9 percentage point(over 23.35％).The edible quality was 83.6 point,over the CK 3.6 point.This variety had the other superior characteristics,such as resistance to Fusarium wilt and Bacterial wilt strainⅡ,storable performance and good germinating ability,and so on.Quanshu No9 would be fit to apply for a fresh-eating or starch-processing variety.There was a principal contradiction between yield and starch content in sweetpotato breeding of high starch content variety,but the coordinated level of the contradiction would be improved with the development of breeding level.With the outstanding performances in both of starch content and yield,Quanshu No9 would be a brilliant progress in the breeding and selection of high starch content sweetpotato variety.In view of the breeding and selection of QuanshuNo9,innovating germplasm though poly-crossing,using the new innovated germplasm as hybrid parents,and enlarging the selected population of hybrid through open-pollinating would be effective measures.
