Productive and sustainable pasture systems:responding to climate variability in the south west of Australia

Climate change and climate variability have been impacting the agricultural area of south western Australia for at least the last 30 years (Kingwell,2007).During this period both minimum and maximum temperature have increased up to 1℃, long term average rainfall across the region decreased by 10-20% (Kingwell,2007),the number of heavy rain days declined by 8-20%,the incidence of frosts reduced from 18 to 13 nights and the length of warm spells increased from 25 to 46 days.Additionally, the rate of change in these parameters has been increasing significantly in the last 15 years (BOM,2007).Projected increases in greenhouse gas concentrations will continue to drive global warming, climate change and seasonal variability (CSIRO,2007).
