Pastoral systems changing from conventional to social agriculture in Mediterranean Italy
Pastoral system is the combination of resources and techniques aimed to optimize sustainable productivity over a long term (Pardini,2007).The variety of resources used in the Italian Mediterranean pastoral systems is very big ( Talamucci and Pardini,1999),nonetheless there is land abandonment. In the decade 1990‐2000 many farms were closed (2,393,090 in 2000 in comparison to 3,023,244 in 1990,decrease‐14.2% ),this trend affected also the number of farms with livestock (1,239, 631 in 2000,which is a reduction of 34,8% in comparison to 1990).Many farmers have seek new incomes by the development of services offered to farm tourists ( agro‐tourism ) and local people ( educational farms, health farms) and passed from conventional forage‐pastoral systems ( that include pasture, forage crops and extra‐forage resources) to integrated systems ( the above resources integrated with new economic sectors).A research has been done to investigate the diffusion of these farms in the Mediterranean Italy.
