Indicators of sustainability for production and biodiversity conservation in Australian rangelands
Australian rangelands provide a diversity of ecosystem services and there is a growing demand for monitoring that based on biophysical, economic and social values.Federal and state government agencies are collaborating to report on change in rangelands, at scales relevant to federal, state and regional needs. The Australian Collaborative Rangeland Information System (ACRIS) takes the pragmatic approach of reporting against themes using available data. The ACRIS collates the data from diverse sources, conducts meta‐analyses using derived indices as appropriate and provides a national synthesis at regional resolution to enable comparisons amongst regions.A number of indicators need testing,as does the validity of up‐scaling point based data.Aspirational targets for reporting are avoided, recognising that institutional capacity is declining and short‐term funding cycles hinder the implementation and maintenance of long‐term monitoring.
