Breeding research of the variety of anti‐thrips alfalfa

Thrips is the general name for Thusanptera insects. Thrips have become one of the major pests in the main alfalfa producing areas in Huhhot.According to statistics, most alfalfa varieties.damage rates due to thrips is over 70%,and as high as 100%.There are more than 10 kinds of Alfalfa thrips,of which there are four in the Huhhot area which are:Odontothrips loti H aliday,T rankliniella intonsa T rybom,Thrips tabaci L indeman, and H ap lothrips aculeatus Fabricius. Pesticides have been used to control thrips for a long time, however, this comes at a high cost, and there are such concerns with its use such the effect of pesticide residue and insect resistance, amongst others. Therefore, breeding thrip‐resistant alfalfa as a method for control should be seen as the main control method.Since 1986 we have undertaken a meticulous observation and careful selection process, breeding a new alfalfa strain anti-thrips alfalfa, and have undertaken research into its characteristics, such as thrip resistance, yield and quality.
