Integration of tree fodder into traditional goat production systems of Uganda

Goats are an integral part of most households in Uganda and are kept under two main production systems, tethering and open grazing ( Ndyanabo et.al.1996 ).Under tethering, goats are tied on a rope at pasture while under open grazing, goats graze freely or herded.Characteristically the goats are taken to pasture late in the day, sometimes as late as 3.00 p.m.in the afternoon.Supplementary feeding if practised is opportunistic.Goats are therefore grossly undernourished and therefore of low productivity. With increasing pressure on land, fallows and marginal areas where they are grazed have become limited while universal primary education has made many children unavailable for herding of the goats. This study was established to evaluate the potential of integrating multi‐purpose tree ( MPT) fodder in traditional goat production systems to improve goat nutrition and productivity in Uganda.
