Inter-firm Information Sharing and the Innovation of Odvssean Technoloaies

This paper identifies Odyssean technologies as a class of technologies whose development depends on inter-firm information sharing. The paper then compares the two mechanisms through which this inter-firm collaboration is typically organized: (i) Collective Invention (Allen, 1983), and (ii) mediation by third-party Knowledge Intensive Business Service ( KIBS) firms1. Microeconomic reasoning shows that the KIBS mechanism requires fewer exogenous conditions to elicit collaboration. This paper also uses computational simulation experiments to compare the efficacy with which each of these mechanisms facilitate incremental innovation. These experiments employ both NK landscapes and non-localized, evolutionary search algorithms. The results suggest that Collective Invention better develops simple technologies, while mediation by third party KIBS firms better develops more complicated technologies.
