A predictive Model and Evaluation for Deformation Band in Saturated Sand

Many materials exhibit narrow bands of intense plastic deformation, termed deformation bands or shear bands, under extreme leading conditions. Deformation bands often precede failure in high strength material. Numerical prediction for the process of deformation band formation is critically dependent on the constitutive model. In this work, a constitutive framework suitable for the numerical analyses of localization instabilities in saturated sand was presented. Based on the continuous mechanics, nonlinear finite element method, critical state and bifurcation theory, a recently proposed model for saturated sand was enhanced to capture the deformation band in the compressive yield strength commonly observed in geomaterials undergoing plastic deformation. The prediction and evolution of this model were implemented in a finite element program and used to predict the formation of deformation band in plane strain compression. The prediction from the model is shown to be in good condition to demonstrate the formation of the localization and the deformation band, according to the numerical computation of a plane strain sample
