Study on Safety Mechanic of Overtaking in Emergency Parking Area with Field Data

The proportion of heavy vehicle is very high in Chinese highway while their performance is very poor. The moving bottleneck caused by heavy vehicle brings many traffic problems, such as overtaking from emergency parking area. To reveal the mechanic of this behavior, field data survey was carried out. A test truck with a certain speed was introduced int~ freeway traffic flow and the relationship of number of violation with traffic delay and overtaking time was studied. The result shows, it is not delay but overtaking time of heavy vehicles before it that affect the violation behavior. The key overtaking time for overtaking on emergency parking area is found to be 30 s based on this, overtaking between heavy vehicles should be forbidden when speed difference in less than 10 km/h. when traffic flow is high, continuous overtaking should be forbidden too.
