Design Method for Safety Improvement of Accident-Prone Highway Based on Traffic Ergonomics and the Policy of Forgiveness Highway

The method provided in the in-force specifications for highway alignment design is based on the design speed theory, being mechanics-oriented and with no consideration of traffic involvers psychological and physiological bearing capacity. Therefore, it is not people-oriented. Combining the policy of forgiveness highway, traffic ergonomics and design speed theory, a design method for safety improvement of accident-prone highway is presented: satisfaction of vehicle dynamics requirements as the baseline for alignment design, the rational need of traffic involvers psychologically and physiologically as the center consideration and inspection indexes, comprehensive coordination of the interaction of traffic involvers, vehicle, road facility and traffic environment on each other, and safety and comfort as the fundamental goal for traffic system design. The method was applied in the safety improvement design of an accident-prone highway in Guangxi as a case study. Investigation of the rehabilitated highway one year after its operation shows that the operation safety of the highway is satisfactorily improved.
