Multiple Stages Stability Model of Tailing Dams and Emergency Plan

An increasing number of tailing dams have been built in china. Safety management of tailing dams directly influences surrounding people and ecological environment. However, few of researches have been carried on this field. Based on the characteristics of tailings dams in China, a multiple stages stability model is presented, which uses stability curves to describe tailing dams safety situation around the life cycle. In the model, safety factors in different water level can be obtained and not only normal operation cases but also abnormal operation case are analyzed. Then, a process to establish emergency plan for tailing dams is brought forward. The model has been used to analyze stability of a lead-zinc mine high tailing dam, named Qingshuitang tailing dam. In order to calculate positions of phreatic surface correctly, a method called prediction matrix of phreatic surface, which is based on regression equations, has been used. Finally, a diagram of emergency plan is drawn to help its owner to establish detailed emergency plan.
