Effect of Ultrasonic on Coal-bed Methane Hydrate Formation

The effect of ultrasonic on the induction time and formation rate of coal-bed methane hydrates (mol percent of methane, ethane and propane are 91.89 %, 5.04 %, 3.07%, respectively) was investigated. The experiments were carried out in a high-pressure system with ultrasonic (the frequency f=20 kHz, an adjustable power 0-150 W). Two different cases were compared: distilled water and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) aqueous solution. In water-gas system, the experimental results indicate that the induction time with ultrasonic was about 1/6 of that without ultraosinc and only about 1/10 if rehydration after decomposition. But in SDS-aqueous-solution-gas system, the phenomenon of critical micellar concentration (CMC) of sodium dodecyl sulfate water solution was not found with ultrasonic. Also, the rate and storage capacity of hydrate increase with SDS concentration between 0 and 800×10-6, while insignificantly between 600×10-6 and 800×10-6.
