Reaction Characteristic of Smoldering Spread to Wet Sample

Polyurethane foam rumple was fitted in an experimental container which was closed to the surrounding environment except at the vertical ends. Smoldering propagated upward in natural convection. The lower part of sample was dry and the upper part was wet with different moisture contents in different experiments. Temperature measurement and thermo-gravimetric analysis were used to understand the characteristics of smoldering propagation. When the moisture content of the upper sample is less than 8.4 wt%, smoldering continuously propagates with the temperature and spread rate somewhat decreases. When the moistme content is higher than 22.7 wt%, smoldering combustion soon extinguishes as it spreads to the wet sample. When the moisture content ranges from 12.6 wt% to 18.1 wt%, gas-phase oxidation suddenly occurs as smoldering fiont reaches the wet sample. And the whole reaction zone is heated up almost at the same time. The results of thermo-gravimetric analysis for both polyurethane foam and char, which is produced in smoldering by foam, are appropriate to explain the mechanism of the occurrence of gas-phase oxidation during smoldering propagation to wet part of the sample.
