Test Research on Stress Corrosion Cracking of LPG Spherical Tanks

Owing to refine the imported crude oil containing high sulfur in recent years, more and more interior surface stress corrosion cracks were found in the oil-refining spherical tanks. The reason and the main influence factors referred to the stress corrosion cracking of the spherical tanks were analyzed in the article. Basing on safety of pressure vessel and LPG spherical tanks, using the methods of linear elastic and fracture mechanics, the mechanisms of stress corrosion cracking in wet H2S environment were analyzed specially to both 16MnR and SPVSOQ spherical tank steel. The stress corrosion cracking tests of pre-fatigue crack M-WOL specimen in three H2S concentrations were performed under the different welding conditions. Through the safety performance analysis of equipment, preventing countermeasure had been proposed. This method could be also extended to forecast accident in LPG SCC.
