Study on Fire Safety of Flame-Retardant PC/ABS Resin by CONE Calorimeter
Anew evaluation method, CONE, has been applied in the research of flame retardant, involving the retarding mechanism gradation of flammability, assessing the emission of toxic fumes, evaluation of flammability and retardation of materials. This paper is intended to evaluate the performances of flame-retardant PC/ABS resin combined with flame retardant BDP by using cone calorimeter, including combustion performances and the characteristic index analyses. The results indicate that the HRR and pkHRR of flame-retarded PC/ABS resin decrease obviously contrasting to PC/ABS resin without flame retardant BDP, and the emergence of pkHRR and TTI of flame-retarded materials also have been put back, and the small difference of EHC data also proved BDP had played an important role of condensation phrase in flame-retarded PC/ABS resin. By using four novel combustion behavior indexes deduced from data of cone calorimeter, which are fire growth index (FGI), total heat release amount index (THRI6min), total smoke release amount index (TSPI6min) and toxicity product index (ToxPI), the fire hazard analysis of flame-retardant PC/ABS contrasting to PC/ABS resin without flame retardant BDP was achieved which also shows that the fire hazard of former decreased clearly.
