Experimental Study on Explosion Sensitivity of Magnesium Powders

According to extensive literature research, descriptions on explosion sensitivity of Mg powders were severely limited, and its systematical experimental study was done only on the basis of JIS. In this article, according to IEC and BGN standards, an experimental investigation of explosion sensitivity of Mngnesium powders was conducted in order to obtain more information about explosion sensitivity of Mg powders, including minimum ignition energy (MIE), minimum ignition temperature of dust clouds (MITC) and minimum expiosible dust concentration (MEC). Moreover, a comparison of different experimental methods proposed by JIS and IEC (or BGN) for these parameters was discussed in detail. The results show that effect of particle size on the three parameters is almost consistent for different methods, i.e., values of the three parameters increase with increased particle size. For magnesium powders with similar particle size, the comparison is favorable for MIE and MITC but less so for MEC. A possible explanation for these differences is the difference in details of equipmont, dust cloud formation methods and so on.
