Influence of Additives on Droplet Size Distribution and Suppression Performance of Water Mist
In order to improve the suppression performance of water mist, influences of chemical additives and system pressure on the droplet size distribution (PSD) and suppression performance to kerosene pool fire of water mist were investigated by cold field and thermal field experiments. The results show that compared to plain water mist, the PSD of water containing chemical additives shifted towards the smaller diameter with the same system pressure. The volumetric fraction of droplets in the range of 50-125μm was increased, while that of droplets in the range of 150-350 μm was reduced. The Sauter mean diameter of droplets (SMD) reducod with the increasing system pressure for both plain and additive-containing water mist. The variation in SMD of additive-containing water mist is more dramatic than that of plain water mist. The additive-containing water mist is better than plain water mist in terms of suppression performance to kerosene pool fire, and the performance will be improved as the system pressure is increased. The influence of system pressure on suppression performance of chemical additives-containing water mist is more pronounced than that on the performance of plain water mist. To change the PSD and to improve the suppression performance by adding chemical additives into plain water is helpful to widen the applications of water mist.
