Fire Resistant Characteristics of Reinforced Concrete and Fire Resistant Coating for Tunnel Linings

Fire damage to a tunnel has caused enormous financial consequences. Tunnel linings are generally composed of reinforced concrete. When exposed to fire, concrete and steel will lose some of their strength, concrete will crack and spall, steel will quickly lose its load bearing capacity. This paper discusses the thermal characteristics and behavior of steel and concrete at elevated temperature. To improve the durability, integrity and strength of tunnel linings in fire, various approaches were considered when investigating the fire protection for tunnels. An effective fire proofing coating for tunnel linings was developed in the lab of Sichuan Fire Research Institute of Public Security Ministry. In the paper the author presented the composition and production technique in concision. The fire resistant characteristics and other physical chemical properties of the coating were listed in the table. The fire resistant coating for tunnel linings is resistant to water, it contains no asbestos and other harmful substances to the body, and it releases no toxic gases into the atmosphere in fne. Some usage of the fire resistant coating in the practical engineering was also introduced.
