Fire-Extinguishing Techniques Research on Spontaneous Combustion of a Sulfide Iron Ore Dump in Mining Stope

Spontaneous combustion is one of the serious problems in the mining of sulfide ore deposits. In this paper, the oxidation and self-heating mechanism of sulfide ores was presented. In view of a sulfide iron ore dump that catches fire in the mining stope, both infrared thermometer and thermal imager were used to measure the surface temperature on the ore dump. Integrating with its practical in-situ conditions, water blended with chemical suppressant (water glass) is planned to inject into the dump to inhibit the spontaneous combustion and lower the temperature. ANSYS software was applied to predict the fwe-extinguishing effects, and temperature field distribution of the ore dump at different time was gained. By the average temperature variation curve of the fire area, it shows that it will cost approximately 200 days to reduce the average temperature to normal, which meets the demand of fire-extinguishing.
