On Evaluating Natural Smoke Exhaust System under Surrounding Wind

Natural smoke exhaust with natural air make up under surrounding winds using a two-layer zone model was studied. Overall pressure coefficient was proposed to evaluate the significance of wind on natural smoke exhaust. Quasi-steady states under different conditions for natural smoke exhaust were calculated. The results show that when the pressure coefficient is positive, surrounding wind will enhance the performance of smoke exhaust. When the pressure coefficient is negative, surrounding wind will depress, even invalidate the performance of smoke exhaust. The critical invalidating velocity is found proportional to -1/2 power of absolute value of overall pressure coefficient. When operating a natural smoke exhaust ~stem of a building under surrounding wind, the positions of vents and air inlets should be carefully chosen to make the overall pressure coefficient positive, so as to make the wind strengthen the extraction.
