Discussion on Calculation Method for Quantity of Mechanical Smoke Exhaust in Shopping Malls with Atrium

In order to find a practical calculation method for mechanical smoke exhaust in atrium, combining with a shopping mall with atrium, this paper made design of the quantity of mechanical smoke exhaust in atrium using performance-based fire protection design method, and simulated the effect of smoke control using Fire Dynamics Simulator. Complying with the Code for fire protection design of tall buildings in China GBSO04. 5-95,the quantity of mechanical smoke exhaust for this atrium should be 104000 m3/h,but in practice, it is not enough, and the quantity of smoke exhaust should be 443520 m3/h calculated by performance-based fire protection design method. The Fire Dynamics Simulator code can be used to investigate the smoke movement in an atrium under fire scenario. According to simulation result, the quantity of mechanical smoke exhaust calculated by performance-basod fire protection design method can make sure safety evacuation.
