Application of CFD in Tunnel Fire Safety

The major accidents happened at home and abroad were reviewed concerning to tunnel fire. The characteristics, hazards of tunnel fire and smoke management methods are introduced in brief. The application of CFD in tunnel ventilation is introduced emphatically. Tunnel ventilation obviously represents one of the key elements for attaining an adequate safety level. The application of CFD tools and methods in tunnel safety engineering is comparatively recent if compared with more technology-driven segments, such as aeronautics and turbornachinery. After a validation process CFD is now reaching a mature state and gaining acceptance also for tunnel applications. If used wisely, CFD has the potential for providing important new insight and better physical understanding, both in the design phase and as a design-verification tool. This paper will present some basic aspects of simulation work and illustrate typical recent applications in tunnel safety engineering.
