Research on Relationship between Pilots Mental Health and Basic Flight Ability
Pilots mental health affects their action, basic flight ability, and even flight safety, so its essential to explore pilots mental health, basic flight ability, and relationship between them, and then provide pilots active psychological intervention and treatment, so as to eliminate the flight accidents or incidents, and improve the level of flight safety at last The 65 pilots who come from the same airlines and fly the same type of aircraft were randomly selected to participate in the test. Symptom Checklist 90 ( SCL-90) and Basic Flight Ability Test were adopted to measure these pilots. The study suggested that, there were significant differences between the scores of pilots and the nationwide norm in SCL-90 on somatization, anxiety, phobic and hostility items (p<0.01; p<0.05). According te the different flight hours, these pilots were divided into three groups—below 3,000 h; 5,000-10,000 h and above l0.000h, and there were prominent differences among groups on obsession-compulsion, anxiety, phobic and hostility items (p<0.05). We divided the pilots into two groups in terms of their actual rank— captain and first officer. There were considerable differences between them on interpersonal relationship sensitivity (p<0.05). In addition, we found that the ten items of SCL-90 negatively correlated with basic flight ability coefficients of pilots, by analyzing the relations between the testing data of SCL-90 and pilots basic flight ability. Whats more, the negative correlations between basic flight ability coefficients and the scores of obsession-compulsion, hostility, phobic, psychoticism items in SCL-90 were significant; Pilots were classified three groups—better, moderate and worse based on different basic flight ability coefficients, and there was a remarkable difference among them on the scores of hostility item.
