Study on Congestion on Stadium Concourse Levels during Evacuation

Only assessing the safety of stand evacuation is not enough for the safety of the entire stadium evacuation. In accordance with stands-concourse levels-stairs-ground evacuation routines, concourse level also plays an important role in stadium evacuation, so we simulate the concourse level evacuation with buildingEXODUS. Congestion on concourse level and the influence of congestion on evacuation of stand exit are investigated and measured. Under the affection of the congestion, the total evacuation time of the stand will even exceed the code limit, 8 minutes. The causes of the congestion include humans preference for nearest routine, flow rate of the stands, location of the facade stairs and the distance between the inlet and outlet of the concourse. And a solution was advocated to lease the congestion in the completed stadium. Simulation result shows that flow diversion is a feasible way to eliminate the impact of congestion on stand evacuation.
